Virtual Colonoscopy
(CT Colono)

A virtual colonoscopy is an alternative to the standard colonoscopy.  A virtual colonoscope uses a CT Scanner as opposed to a camera to render 3D images of the inside of the large intestines.  Essentially it provides the same information about the large intestines as a standard colonoscopy in terms of visualization. Bowel preparation is also the same.  Following are the major differences:

  • No camera is inserted into the rectum

  • No opportunity to biopsy or remove suspicious lesions/polyps if found

  • Some X-Ray radiation exposure from the CT Scan
